Once the bulbs finish for another year it's time for the re-emergence of perennial plants. I love it when my peonies start to poke through; It's a sign that summer is well on its way and we can expect a riot of colour in the garden.
It doesn't take long for perennials to romp on and getting supports in early is crucial. As Monty Don always tell us, get these in before your plants need them. Early placing of supports ensures new growth isn't damaged and plants are able to weave their way around the support, so the support blends in.
It also means you won't get caught out should we have a heavy downpour or winds, which can damage stems. Trying to stake a plant after damage is an almost impossible task.
Whatever style of plant supports you are drawn too - lobster pots, cloches, rings or obelisks, they all have a role to play. Long stemmed plants like delphiniums are prone to toppling in wind, whilst big and blowsy numbers like peonies need support to prevent them from flopping and falling over, like in this round peony support cage.
Supports are a must for climbing plants grown in borders without a wall or fence to scramble over, such as clematis, various roses and sweet peas. These bow plant supports are perfect for helping some blooms to find their correct shape.

Supports can separate blooms, adding to the overall effect of a plant. They can be used in the garden or in pots and can provide an attractive architectural feature as well as serving a practical purpose.
Cloche plant supports are superb for protecting plants against the elements. Pack them with straw and you have instant insulation.
